OPEEP is thrilled to begin our first semester with our new embedded degree student cohort located in The Ohio Reformatory for Women (ORW) in Marysville, Ohio! Twenty degree students began earning their Bachelor of Arts degree in Women’s, Gender, & Sexuality studies beginning this fall semester. The undergraduate major in Women's, Gender and Sexuality Studies (WGSS) provides students with an understanding of the importance of gender and sexuality as categories of analysis and their intersections with race, ethnicity, class, age, nationality and (dis)ability. An education in WGSS brings together expertise in many fields, including literature, ethnic studies, philosophy, history, sociology, psychology, geography, and media studies. OPEEP degree students bring a diverse range of lived experiences and educational experiences to the classroom, and we are excited to support our first cohort of degree students!
OPEEP is offering three degree courses for the fall semester. Newark professor Dr. Rachel Schneider is teaching Sociology 2463: Social Inequality. Dr. Schneider’s course focuses on origins and characteristics of social class, how class is related to power relationships in American society, and how class intersects with both race and gender. Columbus professor Dr. Linda Mizejewski is teaching WGSS 2326S: Feminist Perspectives on Addiction. Her course focuses on feminist and traditional approaches to addiction and recovery; motherhood and reproductive rights; public policy and criminalization; representations of substance abuse in popular culture; recovery memoirs; and the special needs of minority populations regarding addiction and recovery. Columbus professor Dr. Alvaro Montenegro is offering Geography 1900H: Extreme Weather & Climate. Dr. Montenegro’s class examines characteristics and processes of Earth's atmosphere and how it interacts with the planet's surface, oceans, and human activity, and highlights how these interactions work to produce extreme weather events such as droughts, thunderstorms, tornadoes, and hurricanes as well as how they affect people and the environment. All OPEEP courses will include campus students alongside the new degree cohort, creating a unique, collaborative learning environment for all students and instructors.
Please spread the word regarding OPEEP’s new degree cohort! Spring 2025 semester course listings will be posted here by early September.
