Imagine New Worlds: Using the Freedom Dreaming Pedagogy Tool
OPEEP is excited to collaborate with the Center for Feminist Research, Education and Engagement (FREE Center) for this fall 2024 kick-off event on Thursday, August 29, from 3-5 PM! OSU faculty, staff, and graduate students are invited to join the FREE Center as we launch into a new semester with a focus on feminist collaboration across campus and throughout the community. The event will take place on the 11th floor of Thompson Library and will begin with a reception and brief remarks from the FREE Center Advisory Board. Following the reception, attendees are invited to participate in a special pedagogy workshop facilitated by OPEEP Co-Directors, Dr. Mary Thomas and Dr. Tiyi Morris, which will delve into the theme of Freedom Dreaming.
The Global Arts + Humanities Discovery Theme (GAHDT) and the Ohio Prison Education Exchange Project (OPEEP) developed a Freedom Dreaming pedagogy tool last academic year. The tool prompts participants to consider harms, their impacts, and strategies for creating pathways to new worlds. Join OPEEP Co-Directors as they guide FREE Center affiliates through the tool’s uses and creative potential for classroom discussion, collaboration with colleagues and community partners, and research. The workshop will include hands-on experimentation with the tool and conversation about other potential uses, including through your own pedagogical practices and tools.
Petey Greene Reentry Simulation
On Monday, September 9, 2024 (from 2-4 PM), OPEEP will present a Reentry Simulation in partnership with the Petey Greene Program. The Petey Greene Program is the largest provider of tutoring and college readiness programs for incarcerated and formerly incarcerated people in the US. The simulation invites participants to step into the shoes of individuals reentering society after incarceration and gain insights into the challenges and barriers they face.
The event will take place from 2-4pm on September 9, 2024 in the MLK Auditorium at the Frank W. Hale Jr. Black Cultural Center (address: 54 W 12th Ave, Columbus, OH 43210). RSVP HERE!
Trauma-Informed Practices for Teaching in Carceral Spaces
OPEEP is collaborating with The Petey Greene Program again on Tuesday, September 10, 2024 (2:30-4 PM) for a workshop focused on integrating trauma-informed practices into carceral learning spaces. The workshop will emphasize social justice pedagogy strategies and techniques to equip OPEEP instructors entering facilities with the skills needed to implement trauma-informed teaching in their classrooms.
Participants will engage in discussion and small-group activities to learn about trauma-informed teaching strategies for classrooms inside carceral facilities. At the end of the workshop, participants will be able to utilize trauma-informed teaching techniques during class and self-care strategies between classes to support incarcerated learners and avoid causing additional harm.
The event will take place from 2:30-4 PM on September 10, 2024 at the Frank W. Hale Jr. Black Cultural Center (address: 54 W 12th Ave, Columbus, OH 43210). This will also be a hybrid event, with a virtual option available. RSVP HERE!
