The autumn semester is in full swing, and OPEEP is as busy as ever! Our degree students are immersed in a rigorous course load and are rising to the challenge with enthusiasm and dedication. Dr. Morris is especially excited to be teaching one of the cohort’s classes, AAAS 2367.04: Black Women Writers, where student engagement has been outstanding. Students have shared that they are either eagerly reading ahead or forcing themselves to stop reading! It is wonderfully invigorating and a joy to teach – and learn alongside – such highly motivated and intellectually curious students.
We are excited to announce that applications are now open for Spring 2026 courses! We will be offering classes in the Humanities, Social Sciences, Natural Sciences, and Arts, at three prison facilities: the Ohio Reformatory for Women (ORW) in Marysville, London Correctional Institution (LoCI), and Southeastern Correctional Institution(SCI) in Lancaster. You’ll find the full list of Spring 2026 courses on our website. Dr. Terrance Hinton’s Sociology course at ORW has already reached capacity! We encourage you to explore the options and apply early; and please share in your networks. Also, be sure to check out faculty profile of Newark Professor Jill Leonard-Pingel, who’ll be teaching Earth Science 1110: The History of Life on Earth at ORW in the spring.
Liberation at the Margins Collective (LAM) is in the process of recruiting new members. We look forward to welcoming new incarcerated and campus members into our vibrant intellectual community. Next month, we’ll be sharing some of the exciting plans we have for the academic year. In the meantime, don’t miss the article on LAM’s recent workshop with Kate Shannon, OSU’s 2025-26 Artist Laureate. Professor Shannon led an informative, thought provoking, and interactive workshop that underscored the importance of incorporating creativity and the arts in education.
Please join us in congratulating OPEEP faculty director, Dr. Mary Thomas, for being selected as an OAA Faculty Fellow for Outreach and Engagement! We wish her a productive fellowship and look forward to the insights and knowledge she’ll bring back to enrich our work at OPEEP!
